30 Years of Building a PM Community
To form a chapter, 25 individuals must be willing to join and pay their dues. A small group of original charter members prepared a charter document, PMI approved, and the chapter was formed. The effort was spearheaded by Dottie Burton. Charter member Eric Moyerman was our first President and Miles Barnett was our second president.
The chapter initially held meetings in conjunction with a Cost-Estimating organization in the historic Engineers Club building in St. Louis. "They had a nice facility, and had a regular program set up, meeting quarterly. We partnered with them as both organizations benefited from the cost savings and the sharing of ideas." The format from the beginning was a dinner meeting with a program or presentation held monthly, September through June.
The chapter expanded into its own meeting space from Joe Hannon's Restaurant to the Sheraton Plaza at Westport, then the Clayton Plaza Hotel for a more central location. As membership grew year over year, the Board began looking for new ways to add value: multiple venues in St. Charles County and the metro east, breakfast and lunch meetings, after-hours networking events, a Young Professional Group, a Toastmaster's club, and a mentoring program.
We were recognized as the Chapter of the Year for Category III sized chapters, for teamwork provided in 2012. In the years that followed, PMIMSL won additional PMI chapter awards for Member Services, Collaboration, and Outreach. Membership continued to grow, ultimately surpassing 2,000 members.
Like most PMI chapters worldwide, PMIMSL had to adapt. Monthly meetings and board meetings moved to virtual formats. Maintaining momentum in a fully virtual world was a challenge, and membership numbers declined. The chapter persevered, finding new ways to serve members remotely.
In 2024, we celebrated our 30th Anniversary. In 2025, we find ourselves in a rebuilding phase but we need you. We need members who will tell us what they need to advance their careers. And we need members willing to volunteer their time to make it happen. PMIMSL remains a 100% volunteer organization. We need YOU to grow.
Consider what gifts you have to offer.
Please consider what gifts you have to offer and reach out to any board member listed on our Board of Directors page, or send an email to our VP of Volunteers. We look forward to seeing you at future chapter events!
